Sunday 10th we boarded the Portsmouth ferry for Caen onward to be present for the handover of an Allures 45 in Cherbourg.
These are serious Blue Water cruisers built to go anywhere at any
time, lifting keels, Aluminium hulls and composite decks, beautiful interiors.
A few snow flakes were falling when we rolled off but by the time
we reached Cherbourg and the Allures team it was looking very white.
The new owners with us their yacht was already under 2-3 inches of the white stuff and
it continued to fall (for the next 2 days!) not only that it got colder
and started blowing a really howler. 60-70 knts.
Clearly we could see the quality insulation working, snug and warm inside. There was no other
option but dig in find good restaurants and weather the storm. By
Wednesday afternoon we'd literally dug the yacht free on her mooring
clearing well over a foot+ of snow to find the decks and were sailing. Boy was it cold though.
The performance as always was impressive and everyone was in good
spirits for the homeward leg.
